What Is “Plain English”?

The Plain English movement started in 1979 to promote clear and concise writing by governments, international organizations, schools, and the general public. The goals of the campaign are to make sure all writing is:

  • Easy to understand on first reading – Uses familiar words instead of jargon
  • Logically organized – Most important ideas presented first
  • Short words, sentences and paragraphs – Uses the fewest words necessary to convey each idea
  • Visually inviting – Uses lists, tables, or diagrams to present ideas

The remainder of this course reviews ways in which you can improve your writing to achieve these goals.
