Purpose & Principals of Guidance

The Four C's

What is the purpose of guidance and why is it important? The answer can be summarized as the “4 Cs.” They are:

  • Change – The ultimate goal of guidance is to change behavior, whether in a mission or at HQ.
  • Consistency – We use guidance to insure that we deliver the same message to everyone involved with the issue. We want to get everyone “on the same page.”
  • Clarity – We want to make sure everyone understands what is expected and how to achieve it.
  • Context – Guidance must address a situation in which it will be applied as well as its impact on other projects and everyone involved.
