Keep the following suggestions in mind when you tackle your next writing project:

  • Stop and think before you start writing – Note the points you want to make in a logical order.
  • Prefer short words – Long words will not impress your constituents or help your writing style.
  • Use everyday English as much as possible – Avoid jargon and legalistic words; define any technical terms you have to use.
  • Keep average sentence length to 15 – 20 words – Introduce one main idea per sentence.
  • Use active verbs as much as possible – Write “they will do it” instead of “it will be done by them.”
  • Visualize your reader – Write in a style that is suitable for your audience.
