Tips for Self-Editing

While it is preferable to have a professional, colleague, or supervisor review and edit your writing, it isn’t always possible. In such cases, your only editor may be yourself. To help you be more objective, try these tricks:

  • Put the document aside for several days before you review it
  • Print out the document and read it on paper
  • Print out the document and read it aloud, preferably to someone else
  • Read each paragraph backwards, starting with the last sentence
