Homepages are one of the tools you can enable or disable for students. Students use their homepages just as they would use them on a personal web site: to express something about themselves.
When the Edit Your Homepage option is enabled (which it is by default), a link called Edit Your Homepage appears when you click Tools from a course page. This link is designed for use by your students, not by you.
You should create a staff profile rather than a homepage.
