How to Use This Course

The following information is provided to help you navigate and get the most out of this course.

Before you begin, make sure you have the following software installed on your computer so you can view all the components in the course:

  • Browser
    • Firefox 2.x, 3.x
    • Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x
    • Safari 3.x, 4.x
  • Adobe Flash plug-in
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader

Note that all this software is available for download at no charge.

Note: For links to sites where you can download the software, click the Help link at the top-right of this window.

Depending on your work environment, you may also need a set of headphones so you can listen to the narration that accompanies each movie.

On the first page of the course, click the Start Course button to begin the course. When you return to the course again, you can either click this button again to start over at Lesson 1 or you can click the title of any other lesson in the list on the right to go directly to it.

Another way to access any lesson and any topic within a lesson is to click the Table of Contents link at the top-right corner of any page in the course. When you click this link, a list of lesson titles appears. Click a title to see the topics within that lesson. Click the lesson title or a topic title to go directly to it.

Table of Contents

From the first page and every other page in the course, you can also click links in the top-right corner to display the following pages:

  • Resources page – A list of links to all the resources provided in the course. To view the resources, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. For information on installing this free software, click the Help link in the top-right corner of any page.
  • Glossary page – Definitions of the technical terms used in the course. You can also download and print a copy of this glossary from the Resources page (see above).
  • Help page – Information on and links to the software you need to install on your computer to view the various components in the course.

When you open a lesson in the course, you see a page like this one:

Topic Page

Each lesson starts with a general description and a list of objectives. Each lesson ends with a summary.

A list of the topics in the lesson appears along the left-hand side of each page. To go directly to a topic, click its title.

To move to the previous or next page in the course, click the Back or Continue button, respectively. Alternatively, click one of the number buttons to the far right of the topic title to move ahead or behind by one or more pages.

Note: Because the course does not “remember” where you are when you leave it, make a note to yourself of the lesson number, topic number, and page number (such as 3-2-4 for Lesson 3, Topic 2, Page 4) so you can go back to the same page when you return.

You can always return to the first page of the course by clicking Home in the row beneath the logos in the top-left of the window.

On some pages in the course, you will see the Play Movie image on the right.

Play Movie

When you click the image, a new window opens in your browser. It may take as long as a minute to load. Click anywhere on the illustration to start the movie.

You can use the player controls at the bottom of the window to rewind the movie, play the movie, restart the movie, or fast forward.

Play Bar

You can also turn the audio off or on by clicking this button:Volume.

When you are done watching the movie, click Close and return to topic to return to the course.

Sometimes, you will see an image on the right of the page, such as this one:
